Team McLean

Raising funds for research into relapsed and refractory childhood cancer, with a focus on solid tumours.

Team McLean is a Special Named Fund at CCLG raising money for research into relapsed and refractory childhood cancer, with a focus on solid tumours.

Helena was diagnosed with a rare solid tumour in January 2021. Her mum Katherine shares her story.

Helena was diagnosed with a rare solid tumour in January 2021 when she was 10 years old. She had been a normal happy and healthy child who enjoyed playing netball, football, tennis, swimming, skateboarding and being with her friends.

Sadly Helena has relapsed twice. Her treatment has involved 15 rounds of chemotherapy, 2 major surgeries, 25 transfusions of blood/platelets, 5 general anaesthetics, 20 sessions of radiotherapy and 150 nights in hospital.

Helena has stayed really active during her hospital stays. She has played pool and hula hooped while hooked up to the chemo pump, attended school lessons online, played her guitar and stayed positive through out. She has lost her hair 3 times.

Being in hospital so much, missing school and friends and facing harsh treatments designed for adults is not easy.

This fund has been set up to raise money for research into relapsed and refractory germ cell tumours (like Helena has) as well as other solid paediatric tumours. Research can lead to better treatments and care, and ultimately prevent other children having to go through this.

We are so proud of how Helena has coped with the treatment. Please support our fund to make a better future for children diagnosed with solid tumours.
