Stand with Sofia is a Special Named Fund at CCLG raising money for research into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)
Sofia was three years old, when on the 6th January 2023, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Sofia's mum, Jessica shares her story...
Sofia was diagnosed in January 23, after what we thought was a hospital trip for a broken arm. On 4 January, we took Sofia to Barnsley Hospital as she was complaining her arm was hurting and couldn't move it. During examination, the nurse noticed some red dots known as petechiae. We were told that investigating this would take priority over her arm and she would need to have blood tests.
The doctors isolated us when Sofia’s results came back due to infection risk. We were told there were some abnormalities in her blood, and it needed more investigation. That night, we were sent to Sheffield Children's Hospital for a bone marrow test to be done the next day.
By Friday 6 January, we were told she had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and needed to start treatment immediately.
We are eight months into Sofia's journey, and she is doing amazingly! Despite everything, she is constantly smiling throughout this long, gruelling process. Hopefully, by the end of September, Sofia will enter the maintenance phase, which means the most intense part of treatment will be over, but maintenance will be the long stretch to bring us out the other end.
We’ve set up Stand with Sofia because we want to give back after all the help and support, we’ve received from many charities throughout the last eight months. Hopefully, this fund can support other children in journeys like Sofia's.
