Matty was only 10 years old when diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. He endured intensive treatment but was brave, dignified and an absolute star. Sadly, it was not enough. Since Matty passed away, his family have been tirelessly raising funds for CCLG, to support research into alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Here, Matty's family share his story...
Matty was a bright, funny, happy, 10 year old when he was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in November 2010. At diagnosis the cancer had already spread.
Matty endured 6 months of intensive chemotherapy and 28 daily sessions of radiotherapy. He went back to school during his treatment, determined to live his life. He was brave, dignified and an absolute star. His courage and maturity was beyond his young years. Cancer is a vile disease that sometimes no matter how brave, positive or determined a person is the disease is too big and too vicious to overcome.
Our amazing boy Matty died at home surrounded by love on 26th July 2011. He was 11 years old. We are so proud to have known and loved him.
Since he died family and friends have raised money to support awareness of childhood cancer as we will never know if Matty would have survived had he had been diagnosed earlier. We have met too many parents who have since lost their child to cancer that we are determined to continue to fund raise for research into children's cancer and it's treatment and in particular rhabdomyosarcoma.
