Elin's Sparkle Fund

Raising funds for research into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)

Elin's family has discovered first-hand how important research is after her relapse, and want to raise money to support further research into acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and in particular high risk, relapsed and refractory ALL while Elin continues treatment. Here, they tell her story...

Elin was diagnosed with ALL in 2016 at just 2 years old. She underwent a gruelling 2 and a half years of chemotherapy at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool which she completed in November 2018, just after she had started school. Sadly, in January 2019 our family discovered that she had relapsed. Since then, Elin, now 5 years old has been undergoing treatment once again.

Unfortunately, relapsed leukaemia is much more difficult to treat and therefore part of her treatment is a new therapy called CAR-T therapy which is being trialled at Manchester Children’s Hospital.

This is very new treatment to the UK and our hope is that this will provide a better outcome than the traditional treatment path. It has involved more chemotherapy and a process where Elin’s own cells have been extracted and engineered to fight the leukaemia when they are reinfused. It has been another tough path for Elin and our family as she has been isolated at home and in hospital since she relapsed although she remains strong and never complains.
